Kenworth has introduced a new Performance Hood option for the T880 with a set-forward front axle (T880S), revealed this week at NTEA Work Truck Week in Indianapolis. Built for rugged vocational use—including heavy haul, logging, and high-horsepower stationary jobs—the T880S Performance Hood blends bold styling, increased durability, and expanded powertrain compatibility.
Engineered with a longer hood and larger cooling module, the new design allows the T880S to be spec’d with the Cummins X15 engine rated up to 605 horsepower and 2,050 lb.-ft. of torque—an important development for high-GCWR operations. The standard engine remains the PACCAR MX-13, but the upgraded cooling system (now 1,440 square inches) offers improved airflow and thermal management across all engine options.
With a 121.7-inch BBC and 31.5-inch bumper setting, the T880S Performance Hood also supports better weight distribution and compliance with bridge-formula laws. Compared to a set-back axle T880, it enables a 16-inch wider axle spread while keeping the overall truck length similar—making it especially advantageous for weight-conscious industries like ready-mix and dump.
This new configuration completes Kenworth’s four-hood lineup for the T880: the standard T880, T880 with MX-Optimized Hood, T880S with MX-Optimized Hood, and now the T880S Performance Hood—each tailored to suit a wide range of vocational demands.
Customers seeking higher power or broader drivetrain flexibility in the T880S now have a new solution, all while maintaining the sloped hood design that supports excellent forward visibility. The updated styling includes a refined stainless steel grille surround, rugged aluminum mesh grille (available in polished or black), stainless steel fender closeouts, and chrome or black air intake spears. The hood is built from Metton™ material for superior impact resistance and retains the 5-piece modular construction for efficient repairs.
